The Patricia Wentworth series featuring that wonder of private investigation, Miss Maud Silver, can always be counted on to deliver a relaxing, comfortable reading experience. In today's mystery novel culture they are wonderful road trips down a small village street where you can be assured of hearing no profanity (surely there must be SOME, but it certainly doesn't stand out in my memory), of reading a description of murder couched in only the most oblique of phrases, and of knowing something lurking in the past will raise its ugly head to cause trouble in the present.

To be quite frank, the Miss Maud Silver novels are written to a specific formula. To say that I have read them all and continue to re-read them speaks volumes about how well Patricia Wentworth formulates her characters. You feel you know and understand these characters. There is something infinitely endearing to read about Miss Silver's high regard for her brooch pinned to her dress collar and the miniscule differences between her best and second best hat. These are added to other aspects of her personality which make me smile and feel soothed by the familiarity. On top of this, the mysteries are actually quite good and will give you a workout for your brain. Wentworth writes in the old style where words impress you and set the atmosphere. One example is when one of the characters is walking through a dark wood one night: "There was light enough when memory held so bright a candle." I think that style of writing is fabulous and so often lacking in modern novels.

This book was first published in 1951 and the story takes place after the end of World War II. There are some modern conveniences such as telephones and automobiles, but people are also still content with candles and bicycles. The world is in transition and this novel is a great place to begin watching Miss Silver untangle the motive and perpetrator of the murder which has its roots twenty years in the past. Once you read one, you will most likely want to read them all.

Retired Teacher and now a private detective. So love Miss Silver! Her quiet reasoning and deducing. Can't get enough of Miss Silver. If you are a Miss Marple Fan you will also enjoy this wonderful character and her relations and the people she comes in contact with.
I love Miss Silver, anytime, anyplace. She is Christie's Miss Marple before Miss Marple. The plots are ingenious, the writing tight and clear. The characters are almost flesh and blood. Our dear Miss Silver is someone you'd love to meet - if you're innocent that is. If you're guilty of anything, she'll find it out. Reading one of Patricia Wentworth's books is to step back in time and relish what good mystery writing really is.

But while there, he finds treasures and money are missing and he intends to prosecute. Then, he turns up dead. Miss Silver must help the police find who killed him. There are a lot of suspects and not that many clues which makes this a hard case to solve.
A first rate job by Miss Silver, with an assist to Patricia Wentworth for telling the story so well. I would mark this as among the better works in the extensive series with which fans of the Classic British Mystery should be familiar. The focus in this one is only secondarily on the Great Mansion; primarily it is the Village in which the mansion is located which is put under the microscope. Invited by an old school chum, Miss Silver is on the spot when the mean-spirited inheritor of the Great House comes to prepare it for sale and to settle what he considers Old Scores with some of those who knew him when he was young and relatively impoverished. Now Wealthy he is going to grind into the dirt the now middle aged Beauty who reigned in the era when they were all young. The result of his opening salvo is a ready-made stage upon which Miss Silver can shine. By dint of literary necessity, her one-time student is Chief police official of the area; he cannot deny Miss Silver's request to see him when she finds the local Inspector too eager to shine on his first big case, rather than be open minded to all of the evidence. As usual there is Romance. both among the young and the middle-aged, to leaven the story.
It should be just the thing for its intended audience.

I didn't particularly care for the prologue which wasn't in the author's usual style, but the pace picks up soon and the story improves. Miss Silver, a retired governess who is now a successful private enquiry agent, arrives on the scene much earlier than in most of the books, because she happens to be in the neighborhood right from the start. Her presence is invaluable in unraveling multiple motives to uncover a villain. The victim, alas, is unlikeable. Almost a prodigal son, James Lessiter was away for two decades making his fortune. Upon his return, he makes it clear that his is a hard and unforgiving nature and he is about to pursue his unforgiveness right to the courts. It is always Wentworth's set-up to have one or more pairs of lovers with obstacles in their path, and they are on hand as usual. Yet the author continues to create characters unique to each story. There are some general repetitions silly or garrulous secondary characters, generic villagers and household help. But the main ones are quite distinct. Written in 1949, this is a clean book, with no modern technology, forensic detail, graphic sex, foul language or detailed violence. It's well written and engrossing, and suitable for anyone from eighteen to eighty. However, people who particularly enjoy cozy mysteries will like it best, and anyone who is fond of mid-century Britain will get the most from it. Since the Miss Silver mysteries always follow the path of Love, Truth and Justice prevailing, it's no spoiler to say that the ending will be satisfactory on all counts.
