I get so excited when Revezzo releases a new title, and Changeling's Crown did not disappoint! I'm still on the fence when it comes to the "New Adult" genre tag, but since I'm really all about the story, being on that fence doesn't mean I won't buy a story that sounds intriguing, especially when it's by an author I've been following for some time.

Changeling's Crown is the story of Briak and Ianthe -- a fey lord who knows exactly what he wants, and a faery godmother who can't seem to do anything right, no matter how much she tries. When their paths cross -- that is, when Briak makes sure their paths cross, everything Ianthe knows about herself is called into question. Does she dare to follow where her heart is leading her, or will she held back by what her society tells her she ought to be?

On the surface, this is a fun, attractive, sometimes light-hearted novella: the ups and downs Ianthe is struggling through are a comedy of errors, the sort of 'so bad it's either laugh or cry' days that I know we can all relate to. Threaded throughout, however, is a more serious, darker tale of lies, deceit, and the knots that we often tie ourselves in trying to please others, ignoring all the while what our hearts are telling us about ourselves. It doesn't hurt at all that the chemistry between Ianthe and Briak is steamy . . .

Changeling Crown A New Adult College Fairy Tale Romance eBook Juli D Revezzo Lavender Dragon Edits Reviews

“I’m apparently nothing but trouble.”—Ianthe

Ianthe is a fairy godmother in training. Well, kinda. After the Snow White fiasco, she’s been waiting for her chance to get out of the penalty box and back in the game! Unfortunately, her latest assignment isn’t cooperating, and there’s a sexy human that she can’t help but feel drawn to. Humans are off limits though—so it’s a good thing Briak isn’t really a human. He’s the ruler of the dark faeries, and he’s ready for his happily every after—with her…

“Did I mention I love troublemakers?”—Briak

This was a cute love story for fairy tale fans. It reads like a fairy tale so that you’re in the world with not much description for the magical elements, you have some higher level lessons to learn (balance between “good” and “bad”), and it’s a fast read with insta-love, fairy godmothers, and a bit of happily ever after thrown in.

Since it felt like we’re tossed into this new world in the deep end with no floatation devices, I was confused through most of the story, trying to figure out the magical rules and mythology as well as the relationships between the characters. By the end, everything is explained, and it made sense since the mystery and all major questions were answered—but I was still left puzzled about some aspects.

Ianthe is a bit on the clueless side, but you can’t help but root for her as she tries so hard to be good at something that’s she’s pretty bad at. Training to be a fairy godmother for her is like having a clumsy person with no coordination skills trying to train for the Olympics. But bless her little faery heart, because she’s trying! I didn’t end up loving Briak as much as I usually do with anti-hero romances, but it was entertaining seeing two sides of him as he tried to get the girl while causing mischief and mayhem.

In addition to the low-heat romance, there’s also some higher level musings on the role of good and bad in the world. Sure, Briak isn’t apologetic about his dark role, and that’s actually one of the things I liked about his character. He’s accepts who he is as well as Ianthe. As someone who isn’t very good in her career, she needs all the support and help she can get! As he notes, you can’t enjoy happiness and joy unless you’ve also experienced sadness, so he and his people play an important role in maintaining a balance. And with that reasoning, who could deny the guy his happily ever after?!

Overall, this is a cute read with some funny, romantic, dark, and thoughtful moments and a 3 out of 5 for me!

3.5 Stars

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It’s charming, romantic, funny, and a very easy read. I feel like the main thing I have to say about it, is that I wish there had been more.

The story follows faery godmother in training Ianthe, who is on a seemingly indefinite probation for doing some un-faery godmother like things. Unbeknownst to Ianthe, the king of the dark faeries, Briak, has been in love with her for centuries. When Ianthe gets put on an assignment that he is attached to, the two become close, though she doesn’t know his true identity.

I would have loved to see more world building. We got glimpses of Everland, the realm of the faeries, but there wasn’t much description. I would have loved to see more of it. It’s a very short read, so there weren’t really any subplots, and I feel like the author has lots of material here to add to the plot (especially with characters like Geldon, the troublemaking faery, and Mallory, one of the humans Ianthe is helping).

The romance between Briak and Ianthe was sweet, though I felt it was a little rushed. This was another result of the short nature of the book. Especially once we hit the end, it was like, suddenly everything was happy and good, even though five seconds before it was all shot to hell. I think the author could have put at least an entire other book in between the last two chapter. I’d read it.

I got super excited when the real faery stuff starting happening (The Wild Hunt, among other mildly surprising events) and then it was like, just kidding, the book’s totally over. Sad Face.

It’s not often my review is mainly “I just want more of this”. Changeling’s Crown is a very fun, quick read, with a heavy emphasis on romance, with some entertaining faery magic thrown in. If you’re a romance fan, add it to your TBR pile.
The ending surprised me because it wasn't something I'd anticipated at all. The hero also surprised me with his true intent, and I liked that a lot. The story has a message about self-discovery and learning to appreciate one's true nature. I enjoyed this one!
I loved how perfectly the fairy realm meshed with the human realm. I found myself saying "oh, no " out loud. I was utterly charmed by the well meaning fairy godmother who's magic takes a disastrous turn. There is perfect balance of humor and romance. It's become one of my favorite books.
