This was given to me as a gift, which was the only reason I finished it. It didn't take me long to realize this was a sequel to something as it was obvious I was missing some of the back story. Even so the whole book felt like a trip to the dentist. Without the Novacaine. The banter that was supposed to be funny made me want to stake them all myself. And there seemed to be no real plot to it. it kind of wandered aimlessly to an ending that might be a step above sparkly vampires, but even that's open for debate. The writing style came off like it was written by a teenage girl. It was a campy version of Twilight As if THAT series wasn't bad enough... camp doesn't help it. There is nothing here that would make me want to pick up something else by this author.

Moore's vampires sparkle in the sun - and then burst into flame! But other than the sun, there doesn't seem to be much truth to the vampire myths and legends - holy items, garlic, running water - none of these phase vampire Jody, and once she turns C. Thomas (Tommy) Flood, he is likewise mostly invulnerable.

This book picks up not too long after the previous book Bloodsucking Fiends A Love Story ends, with Tommy expressing his displeasure over being turned into a vampire ("You suck!"). Now he and Jody are on the run from the Emperor of San Francisco, the Animals (night stockers from Safeway, with whom Tommy used to be friends) and the ancient vampire Elijah, who effects an escape from his bronze shell. On the other hand, Tommy and Jody have the assistance of Abby Normal, who recognized Tommy for what he was when they met in a Walgreens and is now Tommy and Jody's devoted minion.

Abby Normal's journal entries make up part of the narrative and seeing things from the point of view of a 16-year-old fangirl is hilarious!

This is the spanning book between Bloodsucking Fiends A Love Story and Bite Me A Love Story, so if you want to get the whole story be sure not to miss this one! A must-have for anyone who enjoys a silly vampire story.
I don't know what has gotten into Christopher Moore. His earlier books have much better characterization, and wittier humor. His latest books are funnier, due mainly to bizarre, vulgar (and yes funny) uses of figurative language. But they don't leave you as satisfied as the earlier ones.
I am rereading Moore's first two vampire novels in order to prepare reading the final installment in the trilogy ("Bite Me"). I enjoyed "Bloodsucking Fiends" (see my posted review) and found upon rereading that I did remember some parts of it from years ago. Having finished "You Suck" I found I remembered nothing, and here is why. There is nothing to remember. The plot for this text is almost nonexistent, and the characterizations fall mostly flat. While "Bloodsucking Fiends" seemed like it could happen, and actually made one feel like they got a full reading experience, "You Suck" makes one feel like you watched an okay movie. A nice way to spend a lazy evening, but not really satisfying.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this novel, but there is nothing to it. It is a quick read; I laughed a few times, and went along for the ride. But one of my favorite Moore traits from his earlier work was that the stories were surreal, cleaver, well written, nicely plotted, and at times even poignant. This text is rarely any of those things. I was also irritated by the frequent typos, and Moore got some details wrong from the first novel, and the anachronisms bothered me. Maybe they were cleared up in later printings?
Its strength is the new character of Abby Normal, and her journal entries are a highlight. They are not too long, and appear at an appropriate frequency in the text. Abby's voice is authentic, and very funny, and she seems like the only character that Moore tried to develop. Maybe she seems that way because she is placed alongside the other cardboard cutouts in the novel, but regardless, I enjoyed her.
I like Christopher Moore; I have read and bought everything he has written. I just don't think this is his best effort. It might be his worst. Still, it is a nice escape, and if you don't go in with high expectations, you will be pleased.
Moore's characters are real, is astonishing. My favorite is Abby. I've never known a 16 year old Gothe girl, but Moore manages to capture what I think they would be like...and it's hilarious. I've read this series three times and they never get old. I wish Moore would add a fourth book to the series with Abby as the central character. Chris, consider it a gift for the dozens of people I have turned onto your books.
Moore is a crafty writer who has perfected his quirky yet addictive style; you can tell quickly that Moore is the author if you just dive anywhere into any of his series of books. He has a rare talent to depict extremely violent acts with a dark humor that leaves you smiling at the memory of a puddle of gore. There are some scenarios that you may never get out of your mind; my favorite is that of a giant lizard monster attempting explosive copulation with a gasoline tank truck; Hemingway never tried that!
